The city was founded in 1855 by citizens of nearby Hannibal and named for General Simon Clayton, who served as an colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. After Hannibal's incorporation into Clayton in 1868, it became one of two cities within the new City of Springfield metropolitan area. The early history of Clayton is unclear; however, it may have been founded by people from neighboring towns who were displaced by land purchases made by General Simon Clayton. In 1855, General Clayborn moved his family to what is now known as Clayton from a farm near Carthage. He purchased 1,200 acres (500 ha) southeast of Hannibal on the Osage River and named it "Clayton". The first town meeting was held on October 3rd that year with twenty-six residents present. The name remained until 1865 when Springfield took over municipal operations and renamed all their localities for military generals or other honored citizens. In 1870, following Hannibal's incorporation into Lyon County and its annexation into Springfield proper via a charter amendment passed by voters at a special election held that year - including those living in Clayton - the city proper officially attained its current name: "Clayton". At this time there were 10,724 residents living within its limits; today only 681 remain within city limits while 2,811 are spread evenly throughout Park Meadows rural park adjacent to downtown Clayton (and included therein). Although many aspects have changed since 1870 when nearly all inhabitants resided within downtown Springfield boundaries - including advances in transportation which allowed easy access to jobs outside city limits; suburban growth around town periphery which has resulted in increased traffic congestion; and changing demographics due to waves of migration from rural areas towards larger urban centers across America during both World Wars - much about what makes today's Clayton so unique remains unchanged: its vibrant community spirit combined with an appreciation for traditional values such as hard work ethic and personal responsibility which has helped make this small town one of America’s most successful communities – economically speaking. Clayton is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settler in Clayton was John Wilkinson in 1819. There were two other settlers in 1820: James Dixon and Alexander Haggerty. In 1830, Bennett Crouch settled on a farm near present-day Clayton. A post office called Caldwell was established in 1832, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The first schoolmaster and teacher were Samuel Parsons and Elijah Hicks respectively. In 1836, Isaac Brinker built a cabin near the junction of the Maumee River and Big Creek; this became known as "Clayton House." The first store opened there by Jno Wickersham on October 25, 1840. At that time there were six stores operating within ten miles of Clayton; five of these served as feed stores for local farmers. In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the Union, Clayton became part of Confederate General George Buell's command during the Civil War. In 1865, Union troops burned down all but one house in Clayton while invading Confederate territory to capture arms caches hidden inside; this event is still referred to as "The Burning of Clayton". After the war ended, most people returned to their normal lives until World War II when many businesses moved away due to military activity or attrition within Clay County alone (see also: Postwar economic expansion).During World War II especially gas stations increased production which helped revive commerce after years of decline When postwar America began its expansive growth 1960s new subdivisions such as Oak Lawn/Oak Park came into being across much rural Arkadelphia east side residents who had been living off small homesteads now had their own neighborhoods they could call home
