In 1851, Clayton was renamed for General Zachary Taylor and the town's growth continued until it reached its peak around 1870. However, economic reasons caused many businesses to close down and the population gradually decreased over the years. The decline began in the early 1990s when gun sales slowly plummeted due to stricter gun laws in neighboring Kansas City. However, things have started to change again thanks to a new development called Gateway Oaks which is located just east of Clayton on Route 66. Clayton is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1837 by settlers from Kentucky and Indiana as a small village on the east side of the River Kansas. In 1854, Clayton became one of twenty townships included in what would become Kansa City (later Kansas City). The town site was enlarged in 1879 when the county seat moved from Topeka to Clayton. Clayton's history started with religious services being held at an old log cabin on what is now State Route 2 near present-day Interstate 435 and U.S. Route 51A north of town on October 28, 1837 by Revs John Hinton and Samuel Gregg for about fifty people who were then living in De Soto Township west of Topeka. On December 12 that year, two more clergymen joined Reverend Gregg: Wm Copley from Independence and David Dixon from Lawrenceburg (now Lawrenceburg Heights), both men having been called to preach here because there were no churches located within three miles (6 km) of where they lived. Reverend Dixon preached first and Rev Hinton served as sermonist; thereafter all preaching took place inside the cabin until 1840 whenxton Methodist Episcopal Church was built across US Highway 50A northwest of town which soon became known as "Dixon Chapel". In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln delivered an address to a crowd gathered around Dixon Chapel during his final campaign stop before he left for Washington D.C.: "This chapel has been my refuge while I have been traveling through these parts - it has been my only comfort." A $10 fee allowed access to areas beyond the chapel doors until 1901 when admission became free for everyone over age thirty-six years old regardless of religion or race; however, religious services did not take place inside the building after 1901 due to financial reasons combined with insurance prohibitive rates set by local merchants against organized religion among their customers becoming too powerful politically or socially given their majority Protestant background and influence within local government bodies at that time . The current name given to Clayton today is probably derived from its location – just east off Interstate 435 – along what would later be called "Judge Clay's Lane" after Judge Elijah Clay who donated land adjacent to his home which provided easy access to water supplies needed for farming operations once developed south central St Francois County . This group formed a committee which recommended changing the name back to "Clayton" after hearing petitions received throughout various counties surrounding us providing similar suggestions such as "Moses", "Nathan Hale", etcetera .
