In 1850, the cash register at this store accepted $1 worth of gold dust as payment for goods sold - a record for retail transactions until matched by Wal-Mart in 2011 In 1860 Dodge founded a foundry here that became one of America's leading manufacturers of locomotives and other heavy machinery; it produced over 100 locomotives between 1860 and 1916 In 1870 Davenport built its first flour mill here In 1907 President William McKinley made Clayton his home during his visit to Kansas City The "Clayton Herald" was founded here by JL Hennessey on October 3rd 1907 with support from local businessmen A community center was built southwest of the old flour mill site which served as both a school and community center until 1975 when it closed due to budget cuts; within two years however it had been re-opened as an art museum which features permanent exhibits on local history
