Clayton, MO is home to the first and only Scope Mounts company in the United States. The company was founded in 1959 by Clarence "Chuck" Swartz and his wife Elizabeth. Chuck Swartz was a gunsmith who designed and constructed scope mounts for use on rifles and shotguns. In 1964, Chuck Swartz passed away, but his sons, Don and Bob, continued the business. When the city of Kansas City was established in 1926 and annexed much of southern Jackson County (including Clayton), the remaining residents ratified an incorporation ordinance that proposed that Clayton become its own city with its own mayor and councilors; it did so on July 24, 1927. The economy of Clayton has been based largely on agriculture since it began to be developed as an agricultural center during the 19th century; cattle ranching remains one significant industry today but has declined significantly over recent decades due to competition from larger cities such as Kansas City and St Louis.
