Clayton, Mo., is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The community was founded in 1871 by General James S. Clayton and his family. The name "Clayton" comes from the Indian word for "flat country." In 1892, General George M. Custer died at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and Clayton became known as the "Custertown." After Custer's death, many local residents donated land to form a military cemetery. The first rifle stock factory in Clayton was built in 1903 by John Tilton and brothers Harry and Earl Tilton. In 1907, J.B. Biddle & Sons began manufacturing rifles there.
