Clayton, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri with a population of 138,821 as of 2019. It is the county seat for Ford County and is located on the confluence of the White River and the Kansas River. The city was founded in 1836 by fur traders from Great Britain, who named it after Sir James Clayton, an English nobleman who had been involved in settling British Columbia. Clayton became a center of wagon manufacturing during the early 19th century and its primary industry until World War II was agriculture; today most of its economy revolves around service sector jobs such as retail sales or health care. The first public school opened in Clayton in 1837 and remained open until 1906 when it was replaced by what is now known as Central High School.
