Clayton, Missouri is a small town in Ozarks County, Missouri, United States. The population was 593 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield–Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original settlers in this area were the man who named Clayton after him and his family; James Clayton and his wife Sarah. The first knife made in this town was a simple piece of wood with a sharpening stone attached to it used by family members for personal defense during Indian Wars. In 1892, a second knife company was organized and started making knives out of steel instead of wood. This company became known as Maynard & Company until 1917 when the company merged with Hahn & Sons Steel Works which continued to make knives until 1949 when it too merged into Phelps- Dodge Corporation. Since the early days of knife production there have been many variations on what has become known as "the traditional American knife." Some examples include: Bowie knives (named after Bowie Creek in Maryland), Katanas (a type of samurai sword), folders (made from Three-Legged Knife grips that allow different hand shapes to be used), X-Bow Knives (named after an arrowhead shaped blade shape) and various other types like Fixed Blade Knives which are usually two inches or less in length and can have either straight or curved blades

The county was organized on April 1, 1840, and it changed its name to Clayton County on November 3, 1850. At the time of its incorporation, Clayton had a population of around 5200 residents. It grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to the development of river transportation and railroad construction near the town. By 1870, Clayton had a population of over 10600 residents and it remained an important agricultural center for many years afterwards. A major factor behind this growth was the fact that Claytons were among the earliest settlers in what would become eastern Missouri. This region had been inhabited by hunting and gathering cultures for centuries before European arrival. When white people arrived in large numbers in this area during the early 19th century, they began to develop new settlements which would play an important role in developing eastern Missouri into one of America's most settled regions.
