Clayton was founded in 1819 by gentlemen named Clayton and his wife Sarah. A post office was established in Clayton on July 14, 1819, and remained in operation until it closed on December 12, 1871. The first store opened in Clayton on October 8, 1827. The first doctor to practice medicine in Clayton was Dr. Elijah Cogswell. In 1830 the town had three churches: First Baptist Church (founded by Reverend Jno.[1]), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded by Rev[2] Alexander), and American Baptist Churches (founded by John Fenton). In 1850 the railroad arrived and quickly changed the demographics of Clayton; within 10 years most of the white residents had left for jobs outside of Missouri or Kansas City because of cheap labor available from railroads. By 1870 only a small number of African Americans still lived here as servants to white families – one-seventh of all residents were black! In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant visited this area during his march across Kansas to invade Mexico; he found much interest here in what he called "The Great West" – territories newly acquired from Mexico under President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order 9606 which prohibited slavery within any Mexican territory north of Texas except for lands east of the Rio Grande that would become Oklahoma Territory under President James Kossuth's Order 4478! This open interest among soldiers led to some great development such as lumbering and farming around this time as well as some excellent architecture including homes built by George Witherspoon between 1865-1868 known as Old Town Square today! This period also saw many stores close due to competition from larger cities like Lawrence and Topeka which started opening up after being spared during the war with Mexico while smaller towns like Clayton went out Of Business Multiple Times! However things began to change with construction starting on Volume Two & Three meetings house located at 5th Street & Grandview Avenue back then known now as Cornhusker Place just south side corner lot off Hwy 59/50 main street today!! Just west side corner lot off Hwy 59/50 main street now home to Wilkinson’s Grocery store currently!! Today you can find nearly every typeof industry represented here including Health Care (Hospitality Hospitals etc.), Manufacturing (Lumberjacks etc.), Retail Sales (High School players etc.), Agriculture( raised livestock etc.)& Service Occupations( Septic systems maintainers ect.). Many large companies have their headquarters located here too like Monsanto Company who has their regional HQ just north side corner lot off I-435 next door to Walmart!!!

The town was home to Confederate General Joseph Easley and many other soldiers from nearby Uniontown. After the war ended, much of Clayton’s infrastructure was destroyed by fire – including many of its homes and businesses. However, over time it has regained some of its lost popularity as a tourist destination thanks to its rich history and preserved architecture.
