Clayton was founded in 1837 by John Clayton and his family. The community is located in thewest side of Missouri, about 25 miles west of St. Louis. Clayton was named after John Clayton, who founded the town on a farmstead which he donated to the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first school in the town was opened in 1838. In 1859, the town became a county seat and it has remained that way ever since.
