Clayton is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Alton, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton was platted on November 3, 1836, by subscription from twelve towns in Clay and Laclede counties. The first school in Clayton opened in 1837. A store and livery were built on the present site of the city hall in 1875. In 1890, Clayton became an incorporated village when it joined with neighboring Springdale to form the Springfield–Springfield–Alton metropolitan area. The city's history dates back to 1837 when eleven small towns subscribed to create a new town called "Clayton." The name was chosen because it resembled one of Jackson's original seven districts (the Kentuckians had won their independence from England). The first brick building in Clayton was erected that year on what is now Main Street. At that time, most of the people who lived here worked foragers or farmers who leased land from nearby settlements. In 1840, three more small towns - Aledo, Carthage and West Plains - joined forces with Clayton to form a new municipality known as "Clayton-Aledo." This merger made it easier for residents to get around since they could all travel together to attend meetings held at Aledo's theater room until finally ratified by vote by all eleven founding townships on February 25th of that year. One reason why this merger happened so quickly was because there wasn't enough space within the new municipality for everyone! Most importantly though, it allowed for business opportunities which would later lead to growth throughout Clay County as businesses moved into downtown areas such as Aledo and Carthage while leaving homes behind in rural areas like West Plains and Aledo proper. The first mayor of this newly formed township was John Witherspoon who served until his death on March 12th of 1844; afterwards he was succeeded by James Caldwell who served until his death on October 8th of 1862 due to natural causes only weeks before war broke out between Mexico and America over slavery issues which eventually led to America becoming involved in World War II; then Adolphus Busch took office until his death six months later due to complications from pneumonia brought about by hard work during World War I; finally David Wallace became Mayor after Wallace’s election victory over incumbent George Witherspoon on November 5th 1886 despite being tried for bribery just two years earlier!!! These are just a few examples illustrating how quick things can change within Clay County during its short history!
