In 1911, First National merged with several other banks into First Midwest Bankshares Inc., which remains one of the largest banking institutions east of Interstate 64 today. In 1932, Clayton joined forces with Ferguson to form the Ferguson-Clayton Chamber of Commerce; this chamber continues as one ofMissouri's most important economic organizations today! In 1936, after years of growth and development within his city limits due to railroad construction nearby ( including simultaneous construction of I-64), Mayor Jno Hickey designated downtown as "City Limits" status meaning all future development within City Limits would be subject to strict zoning laws governing minimums for lot sizes and setback distances from public streets/ thoroughfares

The first post office was established in 1837, and it remained open until 1907. In that year, Clayton became an independent city when it was annexed by Kansas City. The city had a population of 40,914 in 2000; however, this number declined to 30,858 at the 2010 census due to various factors including annexation by KCMO and decline of job opportunities for residents within the city limits (due to overall economic decline). The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is located in downtown Clayton and has been one of America's leading universities since its founding in 1911.
