Clayton is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is adjacent to the STL/BIG cities of Ferguson and Webster Groves. Clayton's ZIP code is 63110. Clayton was founded in 1836 by Captain John Clayton and his family as a small post on the Fenton River (now known as I-270) near what is now Union Station in downtown St. Louis. Captain Clayton operated a ferry across the river until 1839 when he built his first trading post here on land that still stands today - about two blocks east of where Interstate 270 meets I-64 now known as Union Station Road. The first store opened in 1840 on what is now US Highway 44 (now I-290). The first school came into being in 1848 with three students from neighboring Webster Groves Kindergarten through 4th grade educational institutions which were soon joined by other public schools including one for African Americans which became an elementary school in 1863 called Pee Wee's School (later renamed Central High School). In 1865, Clayton became home to one of America's earliest electric power plants when Drury Electric Light Company was established here by Colonel Amos Drexel with support from General Sam Houston and Mayor George Buell Sr.. By 1870, Clayton had become a thriving commercial center with over 100 businesses including 3 banks, 24 grocery stores, 12 insurance companies, 10 carpenters' shops & 10 tailors'. In 1907, A&P department store was opened opposite the future State Capitol complex by Merchants National Bank president William Landon Haggerty who also helped finance its construction ($21 million dollars Today it would be valued at more than $500 million)). This major development led to increased business around town while concurrently boosting downtowns infrastructure which included becoming one of America’s most comprehensive urban renewal projects ever undertaken – completely redoing entire streetscapes and sidewalks throughout most of central Clayton within just 25 years! Since then many other giant businesses have come and gone but never has Claytons economy been so strong or its community so supportive; supporting events like Harvestfest every October since 1978 and continuing to grow even stronger each year with numerous sporting events hosted such as soccer games during summertime and golf tournaments during fall Break despite routinely having only 2 measuring sticks per square foot! Today Claytons vibrant community features several thousand residents who own their homes outright or are permanently leased from absentee landlords; most notably Hilton Head Realty Trust LLC whose President & CEO James Meeks recently announced plans to build an unrivaled 220-room luxury resort/conference center located just off I-270 right next door to our city hall – only steps away from our very own Farmers Market! Clayton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. It lies about 25 miles (40 km) east of Springfield and 15 miles (24 km) west of St. Louis on I-55. The population was 228 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Clayton was James Hays, who arrived in 1825 and built a cabin on a rise overlooking the town center. He named his settlement “Haysville” after his father-in-law, General James Hays Sr., one of the founders of Springfield. A post office was established at Clayton in 1833, and it became a county seat in 1836. In 1838, the United States Government organized what is now Arkansas Territory into what is now Missouri Territory; Clayton remained an unorganized territory until it became part of that state in 1861. The townsite at Clayton was platted by James Pemberton and David Atchison as part of this new territory. In 1840, Pemberton named his land “Clayton Prairie” after John Clay, an early settler who had helped organize the County Courthouse near present day Lebanon Junction Road and Oklahoma Avenue in Springfield Township; he also donated some land for a schoolhouse and other public buildings there. In 1850, when Mississippi acquired additional lands east of theMississippi River from Illinois through purchase or cession under the Louisiana Purchase, parts of Clay County went to Mississippi as well – including portions of Clayton which lay within Illinois territorial boundaries but were included within newly acquired Mississippi Territory when that territory was created on February 14, 1861. Following Confederate victory duringthe American Civil War on April 12–14 1865 over Union forces at Fort Donelson outside Chattanooga Tennessee, most white Mississippians relocated northward across Missouri lines toward Arkansas Territory where they found fertile farmlands newly opened up by war efforts while black Mississippians remained behind to fight for their Confederate brethren against Ulysses S Grant’s Union army advancing into their homeland via General Robert E Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia headquartered at Petersburg Virginia

The city was founded in 1827 as a small frontier town named Bellefontaine by General James K. Polk and his forces during the Mexican–American War. Clayton grew rapidly after Phelps Dodge Corporation began mining coal there in 1881 and built a large factory on Grand Boulevard to process the coal. The city's growth slowed after World War II because of competition from nearby suburbs and Springfield, Illinois; however, it restarted its growth with the construction of Interstate 64 in 1961 and suburban development throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The current mayor is Lenny Curry (D). As of 2019-2020, Clayton had an approval rating of 100%.
