Clayton, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Clayton was James Fenton who arrived in 1837 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on the east side of present day Clayton Road. A school was constructed on State Highway 9 about 1850 by Isaac Capps, Daniel Eagleton and others. A gristmill operated in Clayton until it burned down in 1893; however, a new gristmill was erected shortly afterward on State Highway 7 about one mile south of current day Joyce Drive near exit 15A of I-435 highway system]. In 1861, when Union General Nathaniel Pendergast moved his army through rural St Francois County to invade Missouri during the American Civil War, he encountered resistance from local farm owners who refused to let their men march into town with military supplies or munitions that could be used against Confederate forces positioned nearby at Poplar Bluff Arsenal (). In retaliation for this defiance by some residents of Clayton – many of whom were also soldiers - General Pendergast burned all but two buildings (a courthouse and an arsenal) within 10 miles (16 km) of Clayton during his raid known as "Pendergas' Raid". This event has been annually celebrated each year since then as "Clayton History Day" festivities include picnics, music and history demonstrations outdoors at various downtown locations throughout the community where citizens gather to tell stories about what happened that day long ago). Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1984, Clayton has made great strides forward including passage of two state laws which authorized annexation by other municipalities within St Francois County: Act No 2 of 1984 (the Annexation Law), which granted city status to Clayton; and Act No 3 of 1988 (the Consolidation Law), which merged all five existing municipal governments into one entity under the name "Clayton Municipal Government". These ordinances helped bring much needed financial stability to the struggling community while also creating more self-sufficient functions such as police department services., fire department services., parks/ recreation service., library service., water Supply/ Sewerage Department., Streets &Roads Department.;and emergency medical response capabilities.: Clayton's rich history can be seen throughout its landscape with numerous historical landmarks still standing today including: Old Courthouse: Completed in 1839 after Wm Hodge relocated from Kentucky; it served as both court house and general store until it burned down circa 1893; replaced by present day building which is still standing despite being knocked down multiple times over the years Old Armory: Built c1860s outside town limits inside Confederate lines during American Civil War; later destroyed but rebuilt several times including once completely outmoded (); now located off dismantled Interstate 435 highway system just south of current location known as Joyce Drive next to demolished old Grigg Mill property] New Courthouse: Completed in 1984 following amalgamation between five previous municipal governments within St Francois County; serves as mayor's offices & courtrooms having replaced old Courthouse which had been lost multiple times over years ] Jackson Park: One acre (.40 hectare) located adjacent to current site off I-435 just south of Joyce Drive next to dismantled old Grigg Mill property], Saint Louis University Campus: Home to Saint Louis University campus main building & satellite teaching/research campuses across three states [] Mrs Kapp Elementary School:[ operational since 1955 with primary purpose serving local children attending public schools situated adjacent thereto ], Beloved Presbyterian Church:,[ operational since 1978]; assisted Glenwood Christian Academy before becoming own independent school ]
