In 1865, when Union General John Buell led Confederate troops into Missouri to attack Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, much of Clay County relocated to join Confederate forces under General Robert Elam at Rolla; only a portion of Clayton remained within Union lines until 1862 when it rejoined the state as part of Johnson County. The village of Claytonville was platted about 1896 by Captain Wm Fenton for A J Goodrich & Son general store heirs G Fenton andhis son Franklin Goodrich II; good land rights were acquired soon thereafter by other owners including E L Meeker (1906-2008), Lester Dearth (1912-2013) and his son Lester Dearth Jr., who developed an agriculturalbased economy with major crops such as peanuts, cottonseed oil and cornmeal that supported local families until 1990s When stripmining began along Main Street beginning in the early 1990s some homes were destroyed while others sustained extensive damage with many residents displaced or forced to leave their homes due to health risks posed by heavy metal particles found throughout their neighborhoods

In 1970, additional land within Belknap County was added to Clayton making it one full township with a total population size of over 2,000 people
