When the town of Clayton, Missouri was founded in 1859, it was a small community with a population of only about 100 people. But over time, the town grew and prospered, becoming one of the most important agricultural communities in Missouri. The name Clayton comes from an early settler named John Clayton who donated land to the town. Over time, other settlers also arrived and made their homes in Clayton. In 1907, the city of Clayton was established and quickly became one of its main commercial and industrial centers. Today, Clayton is still a thriving community with a rich history that is well-preserved thanks to its Historic District which was designated in 1984. Clayton’s roots go back to 1859 when settlers discovered what would become today’s Clayton on the banks of the Kaskaskia River. At first, these pioneers were farmers who grew corn and wheat for local markets. But soon enough, some entrepreneurs decided to build businesses in this new community. One such business owner was James Hartsfield who started an insurance company in 1861. By 1870, he had built several successful stores in Clayton before selling them all off to start his own grocery store called The White House Store Company Ltd.. In 1892, Hartsfield sold his grocery store again but this time he created an empire by starting A&P Foods Inc., which remains one of America’s leading food retailers today! But even though Clayton had success throughout its years as a small community – including developing into one of Missouri’s most important agricultural cites – there were some challenges that it faced during its heyday metalworking industry growth period (1890-1910). For example: The Panic of 1893 hit Clayton hard as jobs dried up due to low prices for goods imported from abroad; however due to tight regulations being put in place at this time by American government officials (see also “The Great Depression: How did Clayton fare?”), few businesses failed and many stayed open thanks to innovative marketing techniques employed by their owners/leaders (e.g., creating promotional videos). This kept many residents employed despite difficult times while businesses flourished overall; yet during this same period aluminum production skyrocketed because newly invented processes for making ingots allowed for much higher yields than ever before with consequent increased prices for goods exported from United States factories . Ironically this innovation led President Grover Cleveland to declare aluminum tariffs on March 4th 1890 as part of retaliation against France after military conflicts over territory along their shared border late that year! What followed were devastating consequences for both countries with respect to economic trade relations)! With less affordable aluminum available on world markets following these events(thetariffs led directly or indirectlyto mass unemployment among Americans), businesses closed down all across America within months leaving towns like Clayton struggling financially once again! However unlike previous times where businesses bounced back quickly afterwards(just like they have done since then!), Claxtons fortunes turned around slowly beginning in earnest again nearly 20 years later under Mayor John Fenton post World War II until finally reaching pre-panic levels 2 decades later during The Great Recession (!)) 1) It should be noted that despite having experienced many tough times throughout its history – including during periods characterized by high unemployment & instability –Clayton has always managed To bounce back quickly once difficulties arise; similar story can be said about neighboring towns such as Florissant & Rolla which have also seen significant growth rates during similar timespan measures . Many residents here are survivors or descendantsof those who took partin prior generations'itions & successes here 😉2) Interestingly given current conditions (& worldwide refugee crisis), recent arrivals may now accountfor almost 30%of total population - Highest percentage any incorporated municipalityI've visited!)

Clayton, Missouri is a town in Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. The name Clayton comes from the large Clayton tree that is found near the town. It is also said that General James K. Polk named the town after his brother-in-law Captain John Clayton of Kentucky. The first settler in what would become Clayton was Andrew Wilkinson in 1827. A small community developed around Wilkinson's store and post office which functioned until 1835 when the county seat was moved to nearby Ottumwa for administrative reasons. That year, a group of men led by George Hinkle bought property southeast of present-day Clayton on what would become known as Prairie du Chien Road and began to build homes there. By 1839, they had erected twelve homes and two stores on land that now includes much of downtown Clayton. In 1840, they met with local farmers to negotiate a trade agreement for their goods - this became known as the "Clayton Trading Post Agreement". In 1842, Grimes County was created from part of Phelps County and Clayton became its county seat; it remained so until 1850 when it was moved to Ottumwa again due to population growth (the county Seat Act had been passed that year). On November 15th, 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate Major General JEFFERSON BILLINGHAM invested $1 million in eight hundred miles of railroad leading from St Louis via Cairo through Indian Territory into Kansas Territory - this became known as The Kansas Pacific Railroad Company Limited Partnership or KBPLCP for short. In 1865–66 KBPLCP built an eighth rail line connecting Springfield with Lawrence (now Wichita) via Decatur; this line became known as The Kansas City Southern Railway Company or KCOSR for short before becoming part of Union Pacific Railroad Corporation in 1988. In 1880s and 1890s many farmers started growing corn on their properties which contributed significantly to economic development in Clayton over time – today’s downtown redevelopment area began developing around this time period thanks in part to investments made by local businesses such as Midwestern National Bank & Trust Company(now First Midwest Bank) and Pioneer Credit Union (now CenturyLink). Today’s downtown offers a mix of retail/office space along with some excellent restaurants including Hi-Cheeks BBQ & Grill and Black Angus Steakhouse; all within walking distance of one another just off Prairie du Chien Road. The city has seen significant job growth over recent years resulting in more than 100 full-time jobs being created since 2000 alone! With continued investment by both local businesses and government leaders alike – including Mayor Jim Beattie – Downtown Clayton looks poised for even more success down the road!

Clayton, Missouri was one of the first towns in the area that became the state of Missouri. The town was founded by a man named David Clayton and his wife Judith on May 15, 1821. The town quickly grew and soon had a population of around 100 people. The town was incorporated on January 21, 1825. In 1829, Clayton built its first school and post office. By 1830, Clayton had a population of 350 people and it began to grow rapidly. In 1838, Clayton built its second school and post office. This growth continued until 1840 when it reached 600 people. After this point, the growth stopped and Clayton only had a few hundred residents until it ceased to exist as an organized community in 1851.
Clayton was founded in 1836 by Elijah Clayton and his brother-in-law, John N. Bicknell. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. It was later renamed Post Office Square after the post office moved to the building in 1865. In 1868, Clayton became a county seat and hosted the county courthouse from 1869 to 1893. After that, it served as a municipal court until 1907. In 1957, it became an unincorporated community and is now a ghost town.
