The city grew rapidly during the 1800s as a result of its location on the crossroads of two major wagon paths: one from St. Louis to Kansas City and another from Illinois to Mexico City. In 1871, the Cheshire Bridge opened linking Chesterfield with adjacent duchy of Lancaster (later St Louis). This new bridge helped make Chesterfield an important economic center within Greater Manchester County and also attracted numerous entrepreneurs to start businesses in downtown Chesterfield. The business district that developed around the original courthouse became known as "The Square" because it centered around four square blocks east of First Street which housed most of the city's commercial buildings and public services. By 1930, however, downtown had largely been replaced by high-rise apartment buildings while much of The Square had become abandoned or used for industrial purposes. Today, portions of The Square are still used as open space within the boundaries of town limits while other parts are residential areas located outside those bounds.
