The Chesterfield Optics Company was founded in 1892 by George A. Breen and his sons, John and Franklin Breen. The company became one of the leading optics manufacturers in the United States, producing a wide range of sightseeing scopes for both amateur astronomers and professional photographers. The company produced its first telescope in 1892, the 10-inch Ritchey–Chandler Observatory Telescope (RCT). This telescope was designed to be used as a research instrument at Missouri State University, which then had only a small staff of astronomers. The Breen brothers were also responsible for engineering the design of many other later telescopes including the 8-inch Schmidt–Cassegrain Telescope (SCT), which revolutionized astronomical photography; and the 10-meter Keck Observatory Telescope (KET), which is stillUsed today to observe Variable Star Clusters during early mornings or late evenings. Chesterfield, Missouri is a town located in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1848 and incorporated as a city in 1907. Chesterfield is located on the banks of the Tennessee River. Chesterfield was founded by Captain John Bledsoe and his family from Kentucky. They arrived in what is now Chesterfield County on July 24, 1848, after wading through rapids on the Cumberland River. The first post office in Chesterfield was established at that location on October 3, 1849. Captain Bledsoe donated land to build the first school which opened in March 1850. The first store in town was built near present day Main Street and Third Avenue. A brewery and gristmill were also built early in Chesterfield's growth. By 1860, there were six businesses operating within one mile of where today's downtown sits; three stores (one of which still stands), a bakery/butterfly restaurant/barbershop (later Chatanooga), a hotel (now known as the Marriott Hotel) and two cotton warehouses (now housing apartments). A mill race ran along the river adjacent to where current Fourth Street meets Main Street leading into Manchester Township past present day Jordan Park before terminating at White Bluff Landing just south of Interstate 40 when it crossed over into Clayton County about mile marker 190th north latitude & longitude 41st east longitude; thence downriver to its mouth opposite Clarksville about mile marker 175th north latitude & longitude 42d east longitude - all situated within modern-day Clayton City Limits! In 1907 Chesterfield became an incorporated city with its own government which included a mayor and five council members who met monthly instead of weekly like many cities then had. In 1916 it merged with Manchester to form new city limits but continued to operate as an independent city until 1997 when it merged back into Manchester again under one government system for both towns combined! Today much of downtown has been preserved including part of Chatanooga’s original building footprint plus most of what remains of White Bluff Landing where I-40 crossed over into Clayton County back then!
