Chesterfield is a town in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Chesterfield was James Wickersham, who arrived in 1811. He erected a log cabin on the present site of Chesterfield High School and named it after his home county, England. Wickersham's cabin and land were sold to James Ketchum in 1814 and he built a mill on the stream that now bears his name. Ketchum also developed a flour mill on the stream and exported cornmeal from his mill to market. In 1838, John Davenport bought Ketchum's flour mill and moved it to what is today known as downtown Chesterfield where he erected a brick courthouse and other buildings. In 1850, he donated land for the creation of East Central State Normal School which became one of America's leading higher educational institutions. After years of growth and development by its founders – including Phebe McCormick Duffield (the first woman admitted to college), Drury Storer (founder of Derby Day Schools), George Noyes (founder of the University Park community), etc.– Chesterfield reached its peak during World War II with an estimated population over 10,000 people but declined following the war due to loss in production or migration away from small town values within larger cities like St. Louis metropolitan area

The first recorded mention of Chesterfield was made in 1673 when Captain John Smith discovered a small town named Chesterfield on the Missouri River. The community was established by English colonists who had come to the area during the mid-17th century.
