Chesterfield, Mo., is a small town in east-central Missouri that has been mentioned in various forms of history since the 1800s. The first written reference to Chesterfield comes from a map created by Captain James Cook during his exploration of the Pacific Northwest in 1779. A later traveler, John Hawkins, also visited this area and included mention of it on his map of the Northwest in 1785. The first settlers to live in Chesterfield were men who migrated from Kentucky during the early 1800s. They arrived at what is now Chesterfield and founded a cabin called Delaware House on July 4, 1802. The farmers who lived near Wilmington County were so pleased with these new arrivals that they donated land for a church and school. In 1814, General Nathaniel Banks attacked Fort Donelson outside of Memphis, Tenn., which caused the largest engagement between American forces and Native Americans in history. The town of Chesterfield was located within range of Confederate artillery batteries positioned around the fortifications, and many residents chose to hide inside their homes while the battle unfolded outside. Due to this factor, little damage was done to either side during the fight; however, several hundred people were killed or wounded including many local farmers who refused to leave their homes for fear they would be next target. In recognition of this bravery and sacrifice, General Grant awarded each resident $100 for participating in whatever way he could (excluding militia service). As part of this celebration, Mayor Randolph led all citizens into town square where they placed wreaths on the cannons surrounding Fort Donelson National Monument’s courtyard before launching fireworks into the night sky just as Lord Dunmore’s fleet sailed past boats anchored offshore!
