Chesterfield, Missouri is a town in Hardin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chesterfield was founded in 1836 by John and Nancy Chesterfield. The first post office in Chesterfield was established in 1837. In 1870, the village of Chesterfield merged with the town of Mechanicsville to form what is now known as Chesterfield-Mechanicsville Township. The first store in Chesterfield was built on Main Street by Jno. Sowell about 1836 and operated for about a year before it burned down. A store built by David Foote on North Main Street lasted until 1840. A store building located on Third Street between Chestnut and Oak Streets became operational about 1840 and continued to be used until 1865 when it burned down due to fire damage from an exploding cannonball during the American Civil War. In 1851, George Wickersham erected a large sawmill on the south side of town which continues to operate today as Wickersham Saw Mill & Factory LLC. This mill produced lumber products such as boards, cedar logs and doors for many years until it closed in 1986 due to lack of demand from consumers following the introduction of synthetic lumber products. Atomic bombing raids occurred over Lancaster County during World War II including one that destroyed most of downtown Mechanicsville on October 15th 1945; this event is also commonly referred to as "The Day Of The Bombs." After World War II ended there were no new mills built within town limits so much manufacturing ceased which caused some businesses nearby (Donnybrook Lumber) not to have their business operations impacted too much since they had previous customers who would come into those stores after bombings had stopped or been lessened significantly since then; however Donnybrook slowly lost its customers because there wasn't anything else available locally that could compete with local companies' product offering post-war . Beginning around 1960s various high school students started going out ontotown properties (including nearby Royce High School) while still attending classes at home so they could go do things like play football or baseball while others set up gear outdoors at school yards whilestill other students still attended school; eventually all these activities led to more people coming into town for shopping than leaving it especially once nightlife began developing along Hwy 9 north/south corridor starting circa 1970 although some people did leave during bad times but generally pretty much everyone stuck around once evening darkness arrived making life quite comfortable for shoppers & non-shoppers alike . Although very small community geographically speaking compared to major metropolitan areas within America such as Chicago or Detroit it has managed maintain a highly significant presence within its own community both historically & currently through its vibrant nightlife scene along Hwy 9 north/south corridor which has allowed for continued growth even though many residents have moved away over time
