Chesterfield is a small town in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first recorded settlement in Chesterfield Township was made in 1814 by Archibald Ferguson and his family. The community grew rapidly due to thefact that there were no natural resources nearby so residents developed businesses manufacturing goods such as flour, saddles, cloth, and shoes. In 1825, the township was organized into a municipality under the name of "Chesterfield." By 1830, over 100 people lived in Chesterfield Township and it had a schoolhouse and two stores. In 1836, James Kapp purchased land east of town for $2 per acre which he plans to subdivide into lots for housing and commercial purposes. This led to increased development around Kapp's farmstead as more people began building on their properties. In 1840, when a new courthouse was built in town (the first such structure constructed in that area), many residents decided to move to Chesterfield because they felt it would be less expensive than living near downtown St. Louis. The population of Chesterfield reached 2,000 by 1850; however industry only began to take off starting around 1880 when railroad construction began making Chesterfield an important stop on the route from Saint Joseph through eastern Missouri and Illinois
Chesterfield, Missouri was founded in 1820 by James Chesterfield. The community is named for the American Revolutionary War general and politician who served as the first Attorney General of Missouri.
