Chesterfield is a city in Chester County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chesterfield County. The first settler in what became Chesterfield was Abram Snively in 1814. He and his family were the first to homestead on land that now forms part of downtown Chesterfield. The town was platted in 1835 by Jno. Waddell and named for General David Butler who had been defeated at Battle of Pea Ridge during the American Civil War. The first school was built on present-day Elm Street in 1836 and served as a daycare until 1840 when it moved to its current location on Second Avenue near McCormick Place. In 1845, President James K. Polk visited Chesterfield while campaigning for reelection and gave a speech at Elm Street School which has been called one of the most stirring oration ever given from an American president on a public platform. This event helped spur development around Elm Street with businesses opening up including Fidelity National Bank (1873), Alderney's Insurance Company (1877), First National Bank (1878), and Goudreau's Meat Market (1889). In 1860, The Kansas Pacific Railway arrived in town with its new line connecting Topeka with Stroudsburg; passenger trains stopped just east of Main Street where today's corner store stands but freight trains continued past this point service until discontinued in 1965 by Amtrak; as such, there are few remnants from this era other than a period-marker at the railroad crossing upstream from town center which still points southward today! Today, downtown Chesterfield retains much of its original architecture with brick buildings dating back to before railroads came through town - many remain even after years of neglect! Some notable landmarks include: First Presbyterian Church (built 1888), Bancroft Block House (1910), State Capitol Buildingiotn 1929–30 under Franklin D Roosevelt - again remaining largely unchanged since then (! ), Oak Cliff Methodist Episcopal Church completed 1912 – being one of only three churches west of Memphis still standing long after prohibition ended & also remains active today as an Episcopal congregation (& ; another significant building nearby which sadly failed fire damage last year (& ); finally, within walking distance all along Second Ave., sprawling brick civic plaza/park complete with lovely fountain & several dozen large trees (! ),complete streetscape making it feel like you're living right next door to central government & business districts acrossstates !! ). There are also dozens if not hundreds more small businesses providing access to everything street level without having to go out into vast areas filled with shopping malls etc.; quite simply put: Downtown Chesterfield isphenomenal!!! Chesterfield, Missouri is a town in Ozarks County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by a group of farmers who moved from Illinois to this area due to the bad soil and lack of water. Chesterfield became a farming community and began to cede land to other towns until it had a total of 17 square miles (46 km²). The first post office in Chesterfield was established on December 8, 1837, and was named for Drury Lane in London. The first settler in Chesterfield was James Fenton. He built his house on the corner of Delaware Street and Elmira Place about 1840-1841. A store operated here until about 1870 when John Kapp opened the first hotel in this area which he called "The Promised Land" In 1865 an act were passed providing for township government with three commissioners elected at large instead of from each individual township like now; however this did not take effect until 1867 when all township governments were consolidated into one under the new name: Ozarks Township Association Bryan Higgins started operating a small grocery store known as The Store at 12 South Main Street in 1929 before moving to 1154 East Main Street which served as its headquarters until 1978 when it closed due to business consolidation within that city In 1951 Lester Hinton erected what is now known as "Chesterfield's" original two-story red brick structure on North First Street between Market and Elm Streets (now home to Ponderosa Pizza). This building still stands today and is used as offices by the Town Board In 1962 Edgar Easley plowed his field right next door to Lester Hinton's property which led him eventually to name his farm "Chesterfield." There are also several farms located within walking distance of downtown including Edward Duhaney's 350 acre corn plantation dating back to 1850 that offers vintage corn maze tours Saturdays during October; corn hole tournaments every 3rd Saturday throughout April & May; duck hunting season open Nov 1- Feb 2 depending on weather conditions; govt housing lottery open late Apr thru early Sept.; check out their website for current events
