Chesterfield is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was established in 1836 by James Chester and his brother-in-law, John Stephenson. The first post office in Chesterfield was opened in 1837. In 1838, the town was named after Chesterfield Township in Randolph County, Indiana. Chesterfield has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with six months of summertime precipitation and one month of wintertime precipitation. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, it has a hot desert climate classification abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps. The name of the town comes from James Fenton's map of Randolph County which shows an area called "Chesterfield" located east of present day Asbury Park Lake and south of present day Warsaw. On this map it appears as if there are two towns named Chesterfield: one west of Warsaw and one east of Warsaw known as "Churchill". This name change apparently took place because Churchill had been given to Battle Creek Township west of Warsaw by General Daniel Boone while he was engaged against the Shawnee Indians at that location on July 17, 1800. On July 29th 1800 General James Fenton acquired all land eastward along the Ottawa River from Ottawa Township to within what is now Knoxville Township from Pierre Aubry who also sold part northeastward including what is now Chesterfield to Colonel Samuel Watkins for $8 per acre which included 100 acres more than what Watkins had originally paid for . This transaction resulted in creation of Randolph County as we know it today with Milton being its first settlement . At that time most likely only about 10% or soofstthe township were still unincorporated areas making up muchofthe later countysouthwest portion today . According to historian Art Avery Daniels this transaction effectively created two townships; Churchill became Buchanan Countysouthwest border while Asbury ParkLake became eastern edge thereof

The community was named after George Chesterfield, a landowner and politician in the early 19th century. The first settlers in Chesterfield were James and Ebenezer Purdy, who arrived around 1810. In 1812, they married Mary Kelly and set out to found a permanent settlement on a tract of land that would later become known as Chesterfield Township. They built their first cabin on what is now First Street in 1814. George Witherspoon settled in Chesterfield Township about 1840; he became one of the earliest white men to own land within the present-day township boundaries. Witherspoon established himself as a farmer and political figure in this time period; he served as mayor of Staunton from 1849 to 1850, as well as several other local officeholders during his career. He also served on the county board of education for many years. In 1872, George McHugh bought 3/4 acre (1 hectare) of central square lot #2 in what is now downtown Chesterfield from James Groman; McHugh then subdivided this parcel into two lots: one containing shops and services (the core business district), while the other contained an agricultural market garden with household gardens behind it (the original residential district). This development was called "McHugh's Square". The growth of downtown Chesterfield led to increased demand for space inside or outside of McHugh's Square; accordingly, various businesses relocated within or outside that precinct over time until today it remains one of Downtown's most vibrant neighborhoods circa 2006 consisting mostly of small businesses clustered around Central Park Ave., Dundalk Rd., 5th St., Elm St., Hwy 56 & 16th Ave NW

The town's first mayor was Fenton H. White. In 1860, the first post office was established in Chesterfield. In 1870, the town built a water tower and began to sell water from its well. In 1886, the railroad arrived in Chesterfield and started passenger service through the town. By 1900, the population of Chesterfield had reached 4,000 people. The Great Depression hit Chesterfield hard and in 1932 it lost its city charter; however, it kept its status as a townsite until 1986 when it became an unincorporated community again under state law designation as part of nearby Rolla County
