Chesterfield is a town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,321 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Chesterfield was James Haughton, who came overland in 1795 and settled on a grant from the Republic of Texas. A store and post office were founded there in 1801 by Major John Haughton. In 1825, Chesterfield became a parish within the Roman Catholic Diocese of St Louis; it remained so until 1984 when it seceded from that diocese and joined the Archdiocese of St Louis as an independent parish. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant established a military hospital here for wounded Confederate soldiers; it became known as "Grant's Hospital". The city of Chesterfield (then called Clinton) was platted in 1868 by Jesse Pickney with land donated by his brother-in-law Horace Wirtz. The first business built here was a grocery store owned and operated by Jno O'Brien from 1870 to 1872. Thisenterprise grew into what is now Midwest Grocery Inc., one of the largest food stores west of the Mississippi River before deregulation ushered in mass competition throughout much of Arkansas and Kentucky during that decade-a period known as "the Great Depression." Midwest Grocery closed its doors for good on May 20, 1978 after more than 60 years in business when it merged with Safeway Stores Incorporated becoming one of America's leading supermarket chains with over $100 billion worth of retail transactions reported between them during 2014 through 2018

Chesterfield was founded in 1795 by Revolutionary War veteran and landowner, James Chesterfield. The town rapidly grew in popularity due to its natural resources, including coal, oil shale, and limestone. In 1847, the townsite was annexed by St. Louis; however, Chesterfield continued to thrive as a small community until the late 1800s when businesses began to move away and the population dwindled. Today, Chesterfield is a small but thriving community that remains deeply embedded in Missouri history. The early settlers of Chesterfield were primarily veterans who had fought in the American Revolution. James Chesterfield had served as an officer in the British army and he knew how to manage land and build infrastructure. He also saw opportunities for business in the difficult times following the war. In 1795, he purchased 640 acres of land northeast of downtown St. Louis from two other veterans for $1 per acre fee; this property would later be known as “Chesterfields” after him. The first store in town opened up on Commercial Street just north of Union Avenue in 1801; it was called The General Store and consisted of a few items such as flour and bacon products along with some oddities like buttons! However, this store was short-lived because it quickly became out-of-date with new customers moving away during those tough times. By 1810, The General Store had been replaced by a more robust outfit called The Star Tavern which functioned as both a public house and grocery store before being closed down around 1830 due to financial difficulties. Over time, other stores followed suit - most notably The Mercantile Exchange which operated from 1827 until 1861; it was here that local merchants could buy goods at discount or sell goods back against cash advances! This type of business model allowed entrepreneurs to survive during difficult times while also providing an opportunity for people to get their hands on valuable goods unavailable anywhere else! Unfortunately for these businesses though, competition from larger companies made them unable to keep up; by 1861 all three businesses were closed down). In total there were six stores operating within downtown St Louis between 1795-1861: four general stores (The General Store, The Star Tavern & Mercantile Exchange), one mercantile exchange (The Mercantile Exchange), one hotel (the earliest known building now known as the Masonic Temple), one printing press (the first printing press ever built outside of England)and two post office buildings (later renamed “Plymouth Place”). However despite this variety there was no attempt made at creating any sort of cartel or monopoly - each business competed vigorously against all others while making sure theyprovided good customer service! Thiscompetitive environment allowed businessmen like James Chesterfield To succeed even when other opportunities seemed impossible! Today’s residents continue this rich tradition by entrepreneurically running their own businesses within their communities - something that has helped support stability over the years while still preserving important aspects of Missouri history
Chesterfield was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries. It became a town in 1859 and experienced significant growth during the Civil War. The town was destroyed by fire in 1904, but it regained its former prominence as a manufacturing center following World War II. Chesterfield is now a small community located within the city of Springfield.
