Chesterfield, Missouri is a town in and the county seat of Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by members of the same family who founded nearby Carthage. The name comes from English settlers John Chester and Richard Stanton. The city is named for General George Washington's father-in-law and second cousin Peter Chesterfield. According to legend, General Washington visited Chesterfield on his way to Springfield to take part in the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution. When he arrived, he stopped at an inn near where Chesterfield now stands and ordered some refreshments. One of the guests was a man who later became one of America's most famous generals - Daniel Morgan - who then took him into his home for dinner. In 1799, Colonel James Knoppers settled here with his families after selling their land around Carthage to join the new nation under President George Washington's orders as part of its Northwest Territory settlement Program. Many early residents were mechanics or farmers who turned their skills to manufacturing during what is known as "The Gilded Age". In 1837, when Missouri became a state following Kansas' admission into the Union as a territory, business leaders in St Louis decided that an eastern gateway should be developed along Route 66 so that trade could flow between those cities andthe Midwest; this led to development around Market Square including Fort Street (now State Street) eastward from downtown before turning northeast along present day Elmwood Avenue until reaching Interstate 44 about 2 miles south of town center on Cedar Rapids Boulevard (I-44 now leads east back out onto Routes 66 & 68). By 1850 there were over 175 businesses active in downtown; today only 10% remain! A post office was established at Chesterfield in 1851; it moved to its current location (on State Street) in 1865.] Chesterfield first attracted attention when two brothers – Nathaniel Junior and John – opened a store on Main Street in 1840. They soon began shipping goods both upriver from Missouri City and downriver from Hannibal on Lake Illinois. Nathaniel Junior died suddenly while still young enough to run the business himself, leaving John sole proprietor but with responsibilities for both Storefront & Warehouse across several blocks along Commercial Row extending southeast from Maple Avenue (& now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). This enterprise prospered even though competition appeared fierce due largely to mail order competitors such as Hennepin Mills ([1850] later renamed Sams Shoes), Sears & Roebuck ([1860]), [and] Brown Brothers[[(1866)]], all originating from Chicago although none quite eclipsing Post Office Square’s size or traffic potential![See also: Downtown Streetscape]. It wasn’t long before other merchants followed suit including Wm Jourdan([1870]), Poultney([1875]), Elisha Cooke([1880]) among others[Note: Most notable contributions came later when German immigrants started arriving"]. In 1860 entrepreneur Elijah Moore built Greene House across Commerce Row opposite Post Office Square becoming one of St Louis' earliest commercial buildings For many yearsMoore operated independently until he merged with another cooperatives group called Armouryvilen Coopersmith villeenization company incorporating fellow Cooperstown businessmen Augustus Kelley (for building stores etc)[ Note: Notable locals associated with Armouryvilen include future Mayor Francis Slay](1907)]. Business continued strong through World War II despite difficult times plus several Dole Foods plants being built just outside town limits ensuing growth within our small community paralleling larger St Louis economy ground zero during Prohibition era!Today more than 50% of all retail activity takes place inside Downtown which has experienced major redevelopment over recent years resulting in increased hotel/motel occupancy rates creating new opportunities for job creation!] Today local restaurants abound especially located on 3rd floor balcony overlooking Main Street serving amazing views!]

The city has also come up with some innovative approaches to infrastructure development such as creating an urban park system that provides much-needed green space around the city center.

The town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, the state of Missouri recognized Chesterfield as a city and it became one of the most populous cities in the state. In 1916, the city became a part of Stilwell, Kansas.
