In 1916, during World War I, many residents left their homes to take up arms against Germany because they felt patriotic towards America; this migration later became known as "The Great Migration." Many young people from rural areas left for cities due to industrialization opportunities available there while others moved into farming communities near urban centers such as Kansas City or St Louis because those areas were less expensive to farm than rural counties in Illinois or Missouri. This change also resulted in increased competition for jobs among farmers living near larger cities which made it difficult for them to keep up with technological improvements that eliminated some old-fashioned agricultural methods such as hand labor needed for crop production.
