Chesterfield is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1838 by Captain John Chesterfield and his wife Sarah. Captain Chesterfield had come from Virginia to take up a homestead in what is now Chesterfield Township. He named the township after himself, because he thought it would make for a good place to raise cattle and hay. In 1839, General Andrew Jackson made Chesterfield an official seat of government. In 1840, Captain Chesterfield's son-in-law Daniel Boone came to live with him and his family in what is now Chesterfield Township. Daniel built a cabin near present day Elmwood Avenue and Park Boulevard. This cabin became known as the "Boone House". After some time,Captain John's widow Sarah married Daniel Boone's brother James Stewart (the first white settler in what is now St François County). They moved into the "Stewart House" until they could build their own house nearby on Cemetery Road (now State Route 47). In 1846-47, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest led a raid against Union troops at Oak Grove Battlefield near present day Turnpike Road in northwest Chesterfield Township (). Colonel Forrest was captured but later released when it was learned that he had no connection with Confederate forces (). As a result of this event(), many residents fled southward into Arkansas or eastward into Missouri due to fear of retribution from Confederate forces (). This exodus created an opportunity for Captain John Cheshireford () to buy 127 acres of land east of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (), which he named "Chesterfields". The town site would be developed over time as housing developments were erected there including Bellefontaine Estates & Chapel Hill Estates; The Oaks; Fox Chase Estates & Willowbrook Manor; Clay Terrace; Cross Roads Manor; American Oaks; Crestview Lane; Lakeside Place & Meadow Glen Courtlande Courtlande Gardens (); Gretna Place (); Logan Square ; Highland Park ; Beechhurst Place ; plus many other names given over time by developers who purchased or leased properties within the limits designated by Captain John Cheshireford . The first store opened its doors on May 5th 1870 inside what is now Fox Chase Estates - then called "Bellefontaine" - just north of center city on Maple Street opposite today’s Walgreens pharmacy building . It was operated by J B Hodges who served as owner/operator until 1920 when he sold it to Wm Haddonbaugh Jr.. Another early store open also inside Bellefontaine Ct.: G F Weiser Steam Laundry from 1880–1892., followed soon thereafter by C R King Coal Merchants which continued operation until 1917 when it closed due to Prohibition related troubles. Other early businesses located here include: A M Gilliard Bootblack Shop Opened 1914 – Closed 1922″(now demolished), grain elevator built 1902 – closed 1984″(now standing), post office established 1888 – closed 1990″(now demolished). Today only one building still standing from that era left within boundaries designated by Captain John Cheshireford : Pine View Apartments which fronts onto Euclid Avenue just north of downtown . That building has been vacant since 1978 when developerLarry Preuss bought it and started remodeling it into apartments . However even though Preuss owns the property exterior demolition work continues all year long!

Atherton's son, John Atherton, also started a mill here in 1840 which continued to operate until 1965 when it closed due to industry consolidation in Kansas City. In 1846, Major General John Custer died while visiting Chesterfield and his body was brought back to town for burial. After his death, many people came to visit his remains andrewsville (nowKansas City) so they could get a look at one of America's most famous soldiers up close. In 1861, Confederate General Robert ELee moved his army from Cairo, Illinois to Marietta Junction near present day Hannibal Boulevard and I-435 where he ordered General Ulysses S Grant to march on Springfield instead of risking another engagement with Confederate forces nearby - this order turned out to be prophetic as Grant latericked over Union troops at Appomattox Court House leading directly into slavery victory over the Confederacy
