Chesterfield, Missouri is located in the Central Time Zone and observes Daylight Saving Time. In 1916, a group of men from the town pooled their money and purchased a hat to wear at meetings of the Chesterfield Rifle Club. The first pistol permit was issued to Harry Cady on November 3, 1916. The current owner of the firearms store in Chesterfield, Mr. Jenssen has been handling guns since 1978. He has been a part-time member of the local police department for over 20 years now. In 1984, he also became an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor and currently teaches concealed carry classes as well as safety courses for schoolchildren across Missouri. Chesterfield is a town in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Chesterfield was James Nixon who came to the area in 1821 and purchase of land from the Potawatomi Nation. He named his new community "Chesterfield" after his home country of England. The town's first post office opened in 1825 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1827, General Nicholas Hays abandoned what became Chesterfield on orders from President Andrew Jackson for not supporting Jackson's re-election campaign. A school district was organized in 1845 by judge John Eckhardt with $5,000 from local investors led by Larkin and Friends Storekeeper Ebenezer Farnsworth. This district served most of modern day Chesterfield until it merged into the Springfield School District in 1967. The early settlers were mostly farmers with a few entrepreneurs involved such as Wm Pritchard (a wagonpenter) who built a gristmill around 1840 which still stands today producing flour and other products; Elijah White (a carpenter) who started a bakery; John Nixon (a bricklayer) who built several residences; Samuel Kempf (a miller) founded a blacksmith shop; Asbury Park Baptist Church was established about this time also ; two schools were opened: one for freed slaves called "New Hope" west of town on Highway 9 while another known as "Old Hope" east of town on Route 66 served African Americans up through high school graduation but then closed due to racism . In 1865 when Union forces took over much of southern Missouri they burned all these buildings including Old Hope . The name was changed to Chesterfield on November 1, 1877. In 1899, the town had a population of 1,826 and it took its present form as an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1907. The community owes its existence to two factors: First were the natural gas wells that were drilled west of town during the 1920s; second were the several rounds of tax increases mandated by state legislatures during that time as part of efforts to fund new highway projects. One resident who helped shape Chesterfield's character is humorous author Tom Sawyer who spent much of his childhood here before moving away at age 10 to pursue a more serious career path.
