Chesterfield is named for Benjamin Chesterfield, an American statesman and one of the two sponsors of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which created Nebraska. The town was platted in 1854 by John A. Potter and James G. Parsons. It became a municipality in 1876 and served as such until it merged with Quincey into Chesterfield County on February 1, 1907. The name of the county seat changed to Chesterfield on December 12, 1912 following a merger of two other towns within its boundaries: "Natchez" and "Fayetteville". The downtown area has been preserved as an architectural landmark with several restored buildings dating back to before the turnofthe century including what is now known as the Potter Building (1855), James G. Parsons House (1876), First Methodist Church (1912), Union Pacific Railroad Depot (1914), and Post Office Annex (1920). One notable restaurant that operated in downtown Chesterfield during this time was The Four Corners Café which closed its doors in October 2009 after more than fifty years in business; however, parts of its historic building remain standing as part of a community revitalization project led by preservationists working together with local businesses who own portions of the property surrounding it. Today, Chesterfield remains an agricultural center with significant retail sales activity taking place throughout downtown along with agriculture education classes offered from local agricultural extension services administered by various agencies including Chautauqua County Agricultural Research Center which also operates a cooperative Extension office adjacent to Main Street near where Potters Arcade once stood; these activities have helped contribute to economic vitality for many years despite occasional flashpoints caused by natural disasters such as floods or tornadoes that have struck other nearby communities over recent decades including Claremore OK
