It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Highland, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1853 by wagon drivers who took goods to St. Louis from other settlements in Jackson County. The first post office was established in Chesterfield in 1855. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1860, and a grocery store and post office were opened in 1865. By 1870, the population had grown to about 100 people. A railroad was built through Chesterfield in 1872, and the town began to grow rapidly. By 1880, it had reached its current size with a population of 1,200 people. After the establishment of the Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library and Museum near Chesterfield in 1907, more people started moving into the community because of its proximity to downtown Springfield (then called "the pearl city"). In 1938, during World War II,[1] Chesterfield joined with neighboring towns High Springs and New Madrid to form an all-volunteer military airbase known as "Chesterfields Air Force Base". The base served as home for fighter planes used by the Missouri National Guard until it closed in 1969.[2] In 1974,[3] due to budget restrictions within local government entities throughout Jackson County,[4] Chesterfield merged with neighboring town New Madrid.[5] That same year also saw the opening of a small shopping center located adjacent to present day high school which anchored what remains of that merger's commercial development today; however much larger buildings have replaced both this shopping center as well as most of what once housed Chesterfield's civic infrastructure since then including its original courthouse/town hall building which still standsalbeit decades later(now used as a performing arts center). Chesterfield is a town in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chesterfield was John Ferguson on April 6, 1827. A post office was established at Chesterfield in 1831 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1855, a branch line of the Union Pacific Railroad was built to connect Brunswick with Independence (now Kansas City), Missouri; however, this line wasn't completed until1857. In that year, the town of Chesterfield incorporated and began to build its own school district which would become one of the largest ever created in America. The present day downtown area of Chesterfield dates back to 1886 when an act by the General Assembly approved the donation of land for a public square and courthouse complex on what is now Third Street between Main and Elm Streets. The square became known as "Chesterfields Square". A local paper called "The Daily Sentinel" began publication on October 15, 1888; it continued until 1984 when it was replaced by "St Louis Post-Dispatch". On July 1st 1898 two new towns were formed within Chesterfield County: Olivette to the east and Arcadia to the west both close to Carthage but neither annexed into Chesterfield proper. On December 24th 1899 two more towns were added: Libertyville to the north and West Plains under jurisdiction of Olivette but also annexation into ChestersFIELD . These towns later all disbanded except for Libertyville which still exists today as an unincorporated community surrounded by rural farmland
The first white settlement in Chesterfield was made by Capt. John Cloyd, who founded the town in 1796. The town grew rapidly, and by 1810 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1827, Chesterfield became the county seat of Chesterfield County. By 1870, the town had become an agricultural center with a population of over 1,500 people.
