The history of scopes in Carthage, Missouri begins with the development of a simple telescope in 1736 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first successful telescopic views were made from the bluff known as Goat Hill in 1814 by Capt. John F. Hall and his assistant, Lt. James Hite. A few years later, Capt. John Sledge built a small telescope on the bluff known as Topographical Hill and began to make scientific observations of local features and plants. Shortly thereafter, he erected a large telescope on Topographical Hill which is still used today for astronomical observations.
Carthage, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It is part of the Hannibal-St. Joseph metropolitan area and has a population of about 1,500 residents. The town was founded in 1854 by citizens of Carthage, Illinois who moved to this area because of the great opportunities for agriculture that were available in the new land. The first store in Carthage was built on Main Street and operated until 1904. The current building was constructed in 1908 and contains a grocery store, post office, restaurant, and other services. Carthage is also home to the Carthage High School which offers high school education from ninth through twelfth grades. The town has several churches including First Baptist Church which was founded in 1903 and serves as the town's main church; Methodist Church which was established in 1907; Presbyterian Church which was organized in 1905; and Baptist Chapel which opened in 1923. The history of Carthage began with two families who started farming there around 1854: John Witherspoon and his wife Nancy Witherspoon (the first female farmer in Missouri). They grew corn, wheat, squash, beans, soybeans, eggs, pork chops, bacon...etc., all of it grown on their large farmstead that still stands today. In 1876 Nathan Bedford Forrest became head coach at Centralia College (now University) where he met one of his students - Stonewall Jackson - who convinced him to move West to take up arms against Reconstruction efforts being made under Ulysses S Grant's presidency. When Forrest reached Carthage he found that most people had left for Kansas or Oklahoma due to conditions there following the American Civil War! Here he set up shop as an enterprising grocer before moving again into coaching during World War I when interest rates were low because money wasn't tight after reconstruction had been accomplished! He died suddenly just three years later however leaving behind a thriving business empire that included four stores throughout Missouri including one located here at Hannibal-St. Joseph Airport!
