The community name comes from the city of Carthage, Illinois. In 1892, George Smedley built a sawmill at what is now known as Smedley Park within the town limits of Carthage. This mill went out of business in 1899 but left some evidence of its existence including a still standing water tower and several other buildings that have been preserved as part of the park area today. Today there are also several restaurants and bars within walking distance of Carthage's core downtown area which continue to serve up modern american cuisine to locals and visitors alike since 1898 when Smedley first opened his businesses hereabouts!
