Carthage, Missouri is a town in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. Carthage is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Carthage were the Potawatomi Indians. They were among the original settlers of this area in 1810 and were followed by other tribes over time. In 1820, a group of white men from Illinois set out for what would become Hannibal, Missouri after being told about an Indian village there by a scout named David Barlow. They found nothing but savages living there so they decided to move on and founded Fort Harrison on the east side of the river near where present day Carthage stands. On July 6, 1836, General John Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment traveled downriver from Fort Harrison and encountered members of the Sioux Nation while traveling through what is now Roseville Township on their way to dance at Sitting Bull's camp just north of modern-day Carthage. The battle that ensued resulted in nearly all killed or captured including Custer himself with only his horse making it back into safety before nightfall. In 1839-1840 Captain James Sledge explored parts of this area which included present day Carthage when he happened upon some Paleo-Indians who had recently moved from Minnesota to fight against Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War based on rumors that he was coming this way looking for them specifically. Aftermath of battle: As news spread throughout civilization as to what had taken place it was quickly realized that there could be no possible justification for such barbaric behavior against unarmed women and children alike; resulting in public outcry across America condemning both parties involved immediately thereafter This event forever changed how we view Indians as well as Native Americans themselves; leading eventually (in 1865) to legislation allowing reservation status for all Plains Indians within designated areas The townspeople arrived following initial settlement by whites around 1830 due largely to wars between France and Mexico over control of Upper Louisiana homeland; primarily due drainage issues caused by heavy rainfall along nearby Arkansas River valley The first post office opened in November 1830 and remained open until it closed on December 12th 1840 due mail delivery becoming too unreliable during those difficult times A local militia company was organized December 9th 1840 soon after city incorporation A list of residents shows only one African American resident at that time; Auguste Chouteau A blacksmith who worked for Wm Hickey & Son store There were also two Indian traders Post Office operated June 16 th 1840 - October 15 th 1840 One individual served as Treasurer January 1st 1861 - February 14th 1861 Cornelius Latimer The first schoolmaster came September 5 th 1850 Druben Wigglesworth He taught 3rd grade until May 5 th 1857 When Tom Green took charge he ran second grade until early 1862 when he became 8th grade teacher For many years Druben Wigglesworth taught Latin then mathematics before moving up into history High school algebra I 1865 - 1870 Lillian Elizabeth White For many years Mrs White taught 8th grade math
