In 1846, George Withers arrived with his family from Georgia and started farming on land that he bought from Andrew Denton. Withers built a house on Main Street and became one of the original incorporators of Carthage Township when it was organized November 7, 1849. In 1870, Jno.[sic] Rogers moved to Carthage from Illinois and opened a store called The Cotton Gin & Brewery at 10 East Main Street
