Carthage is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, and the seat of Carthage County. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The discovery of potash and copper in areas near Carthage began to change the economic landscape in this region around 1810 and led to increased industry and trade throughout Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and other states as well as exchange with Spanish colonies in South America. In 1815, Hannibal Hamlin donated land for a town on the banks of the River Des Peres just north of present-day Springfield. This new town became known as Carthage because its founders were descended from Hamlin's family. In 1821, Missouri Statehood was granted to Missouri by Congress under Article III of the United States Constitution which stated "No Person belonging to any foreign country shall be admitted into this Union but he may own property within twelve miles [20 km] of all proper points of entry." With this law came an influx of immigrants – primarily Germans – who founded several small towns across rural central Missouri including Carthage and Prairie du Chien before settling permanently in what is now suburban St. Louis by 1830 according to one estimate. A post office called Carthage been established in 1827; it was discontinued in 1865 due to mail volume considerations only being sent from Cairo/St Joseph (then spelled "Cairo") instead during that time period.– A new post office called Springfield renamed itself Carthage on December 12th 1840 after becoming an equal partner with Cairo–St Joseph with respect to postage rates.– The first black person registered at Municipal Court was Nancy Crayton on January 1st 1841.– After three years without a sheriff or court system following numerous Indian raids which left many citizens homeless during that time period some residents formed a vigilante group known as The White League which used force if necessary against criminals or Indians they considered hostile.– On November 10th 1850 a local newspaper published an editorial entitled "The Righteous Amongthe Nations" which dedicated entire issue (pages 2-4) to stories about acts committed by citizens against foreigners whom they considered guilty due to their actions such as robbery or arson.— In 1860 when Hannibal Hamlin donated land for what would become Kiel Auditorium his son George Washington Hamlin took over ownership since his father died unassuming days earlier.— By 1870 there were more than 1,000 businesses employing more than 578 people within downtown– When Kansas became a state following admission into the union on August 15th 1861 Carthage had already lost most if not all its businesses opportunities associated with agricultural production along with much jobs elsewhere outside urban cores like St Louis; however it did maintain its status as homeport for many naval vessels serving both Confederate forces inside and outsideofMissouri.— As early as 1865 there were reports that damage done by tornado outbreak near Kiel Auditorium had reached $50000 while another tornado destroyed Dwelling House No 6 opposite Goethe Park April 21st 1865 also claimed lives among other injuries.— By 1900 almost half a century later only 24 businesses remained open Downtown while less then 10% employed more than 50 people—- Businesses closed down until 2000 due to lack of customers & competition from online services
