Carthage, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Carthage was founded in 1836 by Captain John Fenton and his family. It became a city in 1907. The first permanent settler of Carthage was Captain John Fenton who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the east side of the creek that later became known as Fenton's run. In 1840, he married Sarah Minton and they moved to what is now the south side of town where they built a log cabin named Pritchard House. They had four children: Mary (1841-1909), James (1843-1924), William Hance (1845-1927) and Anna Jane (1848-1920). By 1850, all but one of these families had left for Illinois because of difficult living conditions during the American Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1865. Captain John Fenton's son James came back to Hannibal in 1872 and started trading with Indians near what is now Rushville, Illinois before eventually settling here himself in 1872 with his wife Anna Jane and two young children, Samuel and Edward Jeter Fordyce Jr.. His store served as both an officetel house for local residents as well as being their principal means of income until it burned down about 1890 due to an insurance mistake made by its owner John Daugherty Sr.. The old mill site has been completely destroyed by fire several times over the years but each time there have been efforts to preserve some evidence or rehabilitate it so that it can again act as a commercial center for the community including hosting events such as village dances etc.. A notable early resident of Carthage was Captn John Fenton's grandson Samuel who served with distinction during World War I volunteering for service overseas on various battlefields including France and Belgium where he attained the rank of sergeant major before returning home after hostilities ended in 1918 underGeneral Pershing’s order “not to fight any more” Samuel also authored an unpublished memoir entitled "My Life As A Soldier" which tells the story from his perspective beginning with his birth until his discharge from military service at age 24 years old while serving aboard USS Monitor when she fought off Confederate forces off Cape Horn on July 8th 1862 In 1886 Dr Charles Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., one of America's leading tire manufacturers based out of Carthage

Though successful initially, this rebellion caused great damage to Roman infrastructure, which ultimately doomed Carthage financially. In 146 BC, following their defeat at Zama, Punic Wars began between Rome and Punic states seeking revenge for their defeats at Zama as well as other losses suffered by Punic armies during the war series known as the Punic Wars (264 BC - 146 BC). These wars ended with Roman victory over all of these states under Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (Marcus Aurelius) in 146 BC; however, this peace did not mark a complete end to hostilities between Rome and Carthage since their fighting culture still influenced each other to some extent up until World War II [1].
In the year 621 BC, Carthage was conquered by the Roman Republic. The city was sacked and its citizens were killed, but the great statue of Zeus that stood in the center of the city continued to stand. It was eventually moved to Rome.
