Carthage, Missouri was founded in 1836 by a group of Scotsmen who were looking for new land to settle. The town was named after the Carthaginian capital of Tripolis, which was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC. Carthage grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of over 1000 people. In 1846, the United States purchased the town from its founders for $10,000. By 1860, Carthage had become an important center for cotton trade and had a population of over 4000 people. In 1865, the US military burned down part of the town because it refused to give up its munitions stockpile. The town slowly recovered and by 1970 had a population of around 8000 people. Today, Carthage is a small community with only a few hundred residents. It is home to two churches, one Baptist and one Methodist, as well as two schools-one public and one private.

It experienced significant economic growth following World War II and has since become one of the most diverse communities in Missouri.
