The first firearms to be used in the American Revolution were pistols. France and England had both started exporting handguns to the United States by 1795, and within a year, pistols were being used by militias in Lexington and Concord. By 1800, rifles had also become available in large quantities and were beginning to be fielded in U.S. conflicts such as the War of 1812. In 1825, Carthage became the capital of Missouri after it was chosen from a competition among five cities. The city’s location at the crossroads of two major tracks contributed to its importance as a center for trade and transportation during the early days of America. In addition, Carthage became home to one of the first rifle clubs in Missouri when it was formed in 1827. This club helped spread knowledge about firearms among local citizens and provided opportunities for shooting contests and other gun-related activities. During the 1830s, Carthage began to become known as a center for education with several educational institutions becoming prominent within its community. These include Dickinson College (founded in 1830), Carthage Female Seminary (founded in 1840), and Hannibal University (established in 1848). Carthage was a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. Settled by Swiss immigrants in the mid-19th century, it became an important market and railroad center during the early 20th century. Carthage was destroyed by a fire in 1911 and remains one of the most damaged towns in Missouri history. The town was founded on April 12, 1809, by Swiss settlers Johann Nepomuk Weis and Samuel Hildebrandt. The name Carthage derives from the Latin word for "safe haven." The town grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two major wagon roads, the Santa Fe Trail and Illinois Central Railroad. In 1827, Carthage became home to America's first school for girls. By 1860, Carthage had over 1,500 residents. During the Civil War, Carthage sided with Confederate States of America (CSA) against United Statesof America (USA). The town suffered significant damage as a result of battle casualties among both Union and Confederate forces. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Peninsula in Virginia, much of what remained of Carthage burned down following his surrender order. In 1971, UNESCO inscribed Hannibal Hamilcar Barca's Column as a World Heritage Site within the boundaries of Missouri due to its significance as a symbol of resistance against Spanish colonial rule throughout North Africa

At first, many people in this new country thought that Carthage would be nothing more than a small town on the eastern edge of what is now Missouri. However, because of its strategic location and its links to Spanish Louisiana, Carthage quickly became an important center in American history. It was here that George Washington met Napoleon Bonaparte during his military campaigns in North America and where John Adams served as President from 1797-1799. The city also experienced some great moments during its early years. In 1821, when a group of businessmen founded the city limits along present-day I-435 with the goal of developing it into a commercial center, Carthage quickly became one ofthe mostimportant cities in America. Over time, other businesses came and went but Carthage remained an important cultural and economic center until the late 20th century.
Carthage, Missouri was founded by a group of Mormons in 1836. The town quickly became a center of Mormon activity, and the town's first school opened in 1840. In 1845, the town's first post office was established. In 1870, Carthage began to develop into a small city, and in 1924 it became an incorporated municipality.
