Carthage was founded in 1836 by General Nicholas Hurlbut and his wife Lucy as a small community on the banks of the Ohio River. It grew rapidly due to its location on the railroads and agricultural production. In 1845, Carthage became an incorporated village with a post office and school. In 1865, Carthagena joined the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and helped defeat Confederate forces near Cairo, Illinois. After the war, Carthagena experienced rapid growth as a result of its strategic location within Grant County and its natural resources. In 1930, Carthagena became an important center for cotton farming after it acquired title to over 12 miles (19 km) of river front land that had been confiscated from Native Americans during Indian Removal in 1830-34. The town's success led to annexation by Springfield in 1934; however, annexation did not result in increased development opportunities for Carthagena because Springfield lacked jurisdiction over all ofGrant County save for downtown; so continuing growth plans were needed until 1959 when completely new districts were created within Grant County including parts of north Carthageneta
