After the war ended (1865), Carthage continued to grow rapidly as a result of its strategic location between Louisville and St Louis on one hand andKansas City on the other hand; it reached 5,000 residents by 1875. By 1905, when Carthage lost its status as an important trade center following heavy industry consolidation within St Louis proper, it had declined from being one of Missouri's "largest" cities to being one of her "tenths." However since then it has undergone constant growth thanks to new businesses opening up around town and increasing job opportunities for local citizens; today’s downtown is home to over 100 businesses including several high-tech startups as well as several large banks and retailers
