Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a small town located in the eastern portion of the state of Missouri. The population was 2,055 at the 2010 census. The first permanent European settlement in the area was founded by French colonists in 1763, when they built a fort on Cape Girardeau Bay. The town developed quickly as a fur-trading and trade center, and by 1812 it had become the largest settlement on the Missouri River. In 1813, the United States acquired Florida from Spain via the Treaty of Gadsden, and known as St. Louis County until 1821, it became part of Missouri. In 1827, during Mexican rule of Texas, General William H. Harrison ordered all Native American tribes east of the Rio Grande to be removed from Texas; this included Cape Girardeau County. As a result of this order, many Native Americans were relocated to other parts of Missouri or Kansas.
