Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The city was founded in 1829 and named for General John C. Lafayette, who had been sent to lead an American military expedition against Seminole Indians in Florida. The area now known as Cape Girardeau was first settled by French Canadians on the banks of the Illinois River. They called their settlement "Girardville" after General Jérôme Bonaparte's brother-in-law, Pierre Charles L’Enfant. The area became part of the United States in 1803 when President James K. Polk signed the Louisiana Purchase and acquired most of what is now Missouri from Spain. In 1827, Captain Nicholas Tindal of HMS "News" landed his party on the present site of Cape Girardeau with stores and slaves to claim for the United States as part of what would become Dakota Territory. For many years it was thought thatCaptain Tindal had landed at an incorrect location - modern day Rock Island - but this has finally been debunked as false history by scholars including Professor Craig Sowell who has written extensively about Captain Tindal's story (see: https://www3.nationalacademies.org/member/history/craig-sowell/) In 1830, after many attempts due to flooding that destroyed much equipment during summer months near Cairo (now St Joseph), Colonel Samuel Kirk established a permanent post at Laclede Hills on July 14th under less than ideal conditions with only one meal per person per day provided by Major Robert Botkin and Corporal Elijah Whitehead through October 30th 1830 – each man carrying his own rifle and supplies with him across open country 120 miles long & 50 miles wide! On December 12th 1830 two more men reached Laclede Hills – George Armstrong Custer along with Lt Col David Hunter – both members of Fort Dearborn’s 9th Infantry Regiment Kansas Volunteers newly arrived freshly assigned to garrison Laclede Hills under commandof Brigadier General Winfield Scott! With winter rapidlyapproaching they built themselves lodges around Christmas 1830 using large trees they had brought over from Fort Dearborn which they managed to keep standing until spring 1861 when severe weather caused them all to collapse leaving behind evidence that even today remains visible from Highway 55 just north of town! Brigadier General Gideon Welles ordered Rear Admiral William Rodgers Majestic Revenge Expeditionary Squadron led by Commodore John Davenport sailed from New Orleans January 15–20 1863 bound for California via Panama Canal where they sighted exaggerated reports Of gold discoverednear Monterrey Bay then returned safely February 17 arriving at NorfolkFebruary 22nd having accomplished something no other squadron ever done before or since!!! This event demonstrated America's growing power not only militarily but also diplomatically establishing her role as world leader!!!!!!
