This event helped spur development in that area and encouraged more people to move to this small town over time. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army destroyed Native American villages near present-day Cape Girardeaus while campaigning against Native Americans throughout Kansas and Oklahoma territory. This action led to an influx of white settlers into this region and increased competition for land among those who had already established themselves there. Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 11,023 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County and home to the University of Central Missouri. The first European settlers in what is now Cape Girardeau County were French colonists who arrived in 1764. They named their town after Jean-Baptistepoint de la Garde, Sieur d'Iberville's aide-de-camp on patrol along the Mississippi River during the War for Independence. The City of Cape Girardeau was platted on April 12, 1826 by James Wagoner and Asahel Haggerty as part of a larger motion to plat all of Jackson County. The plat includes land east of the Kaskaskia River and north of present day US Highway 64/Missouri Route 66. On July 1, 1827, following an act by the General Assembly which authorized judicial proceedings throughout Jackson County without having to have local Board of Commissioners appointed pursuant to Section 5406(a) of the Arkansas Constitution (1821), James Wagoner organized a citizens' committee to petition for incorporation into Territory Of Kansas. Included among members were representatives from both Jackson and Newton counties including Wagoner's brother David Wagoner who served as its secretary; John Sibley; Elijah Bender; William Goodrich; Jabez Purdy; Daniel Davenport Sr.; Ebenezer Holmes; Gideon Granger; Solomon Griggs Jr.; Amos Hayden; Ebenezer Holmes Sr.; Abraham Jenkinson ; David Woodruff Jr., Masons &c., Isaac Whitney &c.(later 2nd Ward Alderman). When Iowa Territorial Governor George Armstrong Aiken received word that Kansas had become a state on December 14, 1846 he ordered all territorial documents delivered to his office so that he could begin preparing annexation petitions for every county in Kansas which would then be sent back to him for review. Upon reachingJackson county Aiken ordered Herbert Spencer with instructions "to take possession"of all lands east or southeast of Kaskaskia river inclusive but excluding land within present day Prairie Village according to current boundaries set out in map dated Feb 21st 1889 preparedby Jens Christensen... When Aiken received news that Kansas had seceded from Illinois he ordered Peter Ziegler with instructions "to take possession"of all lands east or southeast...of Kaskaskia River inclusive but exclude land within present day Prairie Village according to current boundaries set out in map dated Feb 21st 1889 preparedby Jens Christensen... Finally upon learning that Joseph Smith also led an army into Iowa Territory seeking independence from Great Britain he ordered Thomas Marsh with orders "to take possession"of all lands east or southeast...of Kaskaskia River inclusive but excluding land within present day Prairie Village according to current boundaries set out in map dated Feb 21st 1889 preparedby Jens Christensen... This order included original Platte Purchase Land located near where I-435 now exits I-480 just southwest corner.... AfterKansas Statehood on January 15th 1861 most residents relocated westward overland through Nebraska territory towards Fort Dodge amassing some 10 miles wide cut off region between due south Wichita Creek and North Platte River until they reached what is now Sioux City NE.. Some people chose not move and erected homes around existing towns such as Council Bluffs IA still standing today while other established communities like Washburn IA abandoned their locations because there was no water available either for irrigation or consumption although many wells did eventually become operational later making this area one of greatest success stories during Offspring Settlement Movement Today much remains unchanged about pioneer days here when streams ran full bore & men dug deep canals supplying cities far away
