Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the city is derived from French meaning "cape of the giraffes." It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Cape Girardeau were French colonists in 1609. They named their settlement after Pierre-Charles de La Salle, governor of Quebec and head of France's Indian empire during the early 17th century. The town became a post office on December 1, 1836 with Ault as its first postmaster. In 1839, a group of priests and missionaries founded Saint Joseph Catholic Church in nearby Riponville and began building schools for local children. In 1840, this church became known as Assumption Cathedral because Assumption Parish included all of present day Cape Girardeau Township as well as parts of Riponville and Lebanon township (now north side of I-55). It was not until 1848 that Cape Girardeau residents voted to incorporate as a city under state law following annexation by St Louis County from neighboring Carroll County. At that time there were only five other cities in Missouri with over 10,000 residents: Belleville (10,521), Kansas City (10,754), Springfield (11,063), Columbia (11,604) and Independence (11,814).
