Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The town was founded in 1839 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Julia Ward Howe as a trading post on the Mississippi River. The name derived from French cape meaning "place of refuge." The first settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived here in 1839 to proselytize for Christianity with the Indian nations that now make up much of Iowa and Kansas. A post office called Prairie du Chien was established in 1841, but it was moved to Springfield in 1847 because of difficulties getting mail through the Great Lakes region at that time. In 1840, an act of Congress designated Cape Girardeau as the territorial capital ofMissouri; but this designation was not followed until 1861 when President Abraham Lincoln made it the state capital after its admission into statehood. Cape Girardeau became an important center for trade and industry during the early 19th century due to its location on both sides of the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa. Major industries included cotton farming, transportation (the first interurban bus system service originated here), flour milling, mining (especially silver mining), lumber production, shipbuilding and fishing; however, by 1900 most manufacturing had departed for other states or been abandoned altogether within Missouri's borders due to technological advances which have since outpaced economic development thereabouts. As late as 1951 nearly all surgical instruments used in America were made here including those for heart surgery; however these days almost all such items are produced abroad although some local manufacturers still produce medical equipmentatives such as catheters and Foley devices

Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 12,716 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by George Washington Carver and is named after him. In 1902, it became the capital of the new Kansas Territory. The history of Cape Girardeau begins with George Washington Carver who settled there in 1837. He came from a large family in Virginia and decided to settle down on the Mississippi River where he could grow his own crops and sell them to local merchants. After some time, he started a grocery business that operated for many years until it went bankrupt. From this experience, Carver learned how to run a small business successfully. He also formed a partnership with another man named Elijah Holmes to start an agricultural store where they sold produce and other goods such as meat and eggs. This store lasted until 1850 when it closed due to competition from larger stores. In 1852, Carver again opened up his grocery store but this time he did so on the south side of town instead of on the north side which caused some conflict between him and his partner Elijah Holmes. However, eventually they reached an agreement whereby Holmes would open up shop on the north side while Carver would operate his grocery store down south corner lot #2 which he continued to keep until 1860 when it too failed because of competition from larger stores In 1862, following Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as President of America, Cape Girardeau became the capital of Kansas Territory - giving it some much-needed stability during its fledgling days as an independent state In 1902,Kansas City merged into Chicago becoming one big city with its own government However, although Cape Girardeau prospered under these changes (and still retains its nickname "The Gateway City"), innercity crime rates soared during this periodurrency causing many people to move out into rural areas in search of safety . By 1970 however crime had decreased markedly within downtown cores across Chicago while innercity rates remained high albeitalbeit marginally lower than before
