Knives have been around for centuries, and Cape Girardeau, Missouri is home to one of the oldest knife businesses in the United States. The first knife shop in Cape Girardeau was founded by a man named John Fitzpatrick in 1812. Fitzpatrick opened his store near the present day downtown business district. He sold knives, hatchets, spears and other tools from his store. Fitzpatrick's shop became a popular tourist spot due to its unique atmosphere and well-made knives. Over time, other businesses followed Fitzpatrick's example and started selling knives too. By 1860, there were more than twentyknife shops in Cape Girardeau alone. In that year, Mayor Lewis Biddle announced that all new businesses must have a knife sale or display at least one type of Knife on their facade for approval. This was an important milestone because it signaled that the city had accepted Knives as an official form of commerce! Despite being popular among tourists and residents alike, Fitzpatrick's shop never managed to stay afloat for very long. In 1868, he moved his store to what is now called Second Street because he felt that it would be more accessible from both main streets (Broadway and Main). However, this move didn't work out as planned; within a few years after moving into his new location (which was only two blocks away from where he originally did), Fitzpatrick died suddenly of natural causes at the age of seventy-eight! This left most of the ownership control over Fitzpatricks' old business to his three sons who continued trading under the name "Fitzpatrick Bros." until 1954 when they changed their name back to "Fitzpatrick & Sons". Since then, many talented people have worked at Fitzgerald Brothers: current owners Rick and Kathy Fitzgerald run it as a family-owned business with more than 150 employees worldwide! They continue manufacturing high quality knives until today - making them one of America's leading knife manufacturers!
