Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Linn County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Linn County. The city is named after General James H. Girardeaux, who fought in the Mexican–American War and served as aide-de-camp to Ulysses S. Grant. The first permanent settlement on the current site of Cape Girardeau was made in 1837 by settlers from Kentucky and Indiana who had come down the Mississippi River on rafts. They named their town "Girardeaux" after General James H. Girardeaux, an American general who had fought with Grant during the Mexican–American War and had been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. In 1839, a group of investors led by Major Elijah Boudin set up a store in what is now downtown Cape Girardeau; they called it the Merchants Exchange Building (later known as The State Capitol). This business community functioned until about 1840 when Smith & Wesson opened its first gun shop in what is now downtown Cape Girardeau and began selling rifles to local farmers and hunterters. Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a town in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from French for "cape of Peace." It was laid out in 1837 and Named by General James K. Polk in honor of Admiral David Dixon Porter who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first white settlers arrived here in 1837. They were part of a group organized by Captain John Silliphant to explore the area around Cape Girardeau River. At that time there were no towns or villages hereabouts and all residents came together to establish a new community on July 4th, 1837. This was also when General James K. Polk became aware of this region and decided to named it after Admiral David Dixon Porter who had fought against Mexican forces during the war as an American Volunteer Corps member under Lieutenant Colonel George Hargrave’s command - one of Polk's earliest military successes as president! Commodore John Cushing soon followed suit naming his own community Montrose on October 9th, 1837; however, both communities continued to use the original names until they were changed officially three years later when Cape Girardeau became an incorporated municipality! The first store opened actually in a remote location about two miles away from where Montrose now stands – what must have been quite an achievement for those early days! And so it happened that within just a few short years post- founding we had ourselves a thriving commercial center with businesses ranging from general stores (such as Green & Steer) to mercANTries (Gould’s grocery store), carriages and wagon repair shops, saddles and bridles dealerships (!), harnesses (Hoffer & Wirth), groceries (Fenton Bros.), hat stores (Auld & Thayer), physician appointments (Dixon Drilling Company) and finally our very own city hall – which still stands today thanks to some very hard work by our current municipal staff! One such important landmark which still remains standing today is our city hall which served as our civic center until 1975 when it was replaced by the much more modern facility we currently enjoy! What really set the cape apart back then though wasn’t just its size but also its unique architecture - incorporating elements such as steeply pitched roofs and protruding gables which made it one of nature’s most striking examples! Not only did this structure remain popular with locals until 1975 but even today it continues to draw attention whenever anyone visits downtown Cape Girardeaus – something you can truly feel every time you walk through its imposing doors! In recent decades things have slowed down quite bit for cape girardais residents although there are still some active businesses located downtown including several restaurants/cafeterias along with several small banks/businesses including two tech companies located right next door each other!!
