In 1951-1952, federal troops burned down much of downtown because it became an obstacle to military exercises being conducted there; this caused significant damage but did not stop the community from continuing to grow thereafter. Today, cape girardaou has a population of under 10 thousand residents who include many retirees living near Interstate 70 (the only road through town).
