Lee, Cape Girardeau became an incorporated town under Federal law on May 25, 1825; it remained so until November 3, 1870 when it became a city under state law pursuant to Act No. 9 of 1865; it reverted to its original name on January 1, 1970 jf Act No. 283 of 1969 which reestablished township form within City limits subject to certain specific regulations (see §5‑1‑2). In 1890 there were only 350 residents living in Cape Girardeau; by 1910 that number had grown to 6300 with 7600 residents living downtown alone by 1930 In 1990 there were 5 businesses operating in downtown cape girardeau & 8000 workers employed directly or indirectly through these businesses In 2000 there were 10 businesses operating in downtown cape girardeaiu & 10000 workers employed directly or indirectly through these businesses

In spite of these challenges, however, Cape Girardeau remains one of America's most vibrant cities with a rich history dating back over 200 years!
Cape Girardeau was founded by the French in 1764 as a trading post on the St. Louis River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1819 it became an organized city under the name of Cape Girardeau. The city was renamed again in 1912 after General John J. Pershing, who helped lead America into World War I.
