Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a town in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Cape Girardeau were two brothers named Isaac and Jacob Riis who founded a farmstead on the banks of the White River in 1838. They named their farm "Riis Rapids". In 1839, they sold their land to Lewis and Clark for $4 per acre. The current town was laid out by George Kapp and built between 1853 and 1861 with money received from a lot sale held by him in that year. The original courthouse was built in 1865 and replaced in 1909 when the present one was erected. A schoolhouse also was located here early on but it burned down soon after its construction. There are several interesting buildings around town which have been lost or changed over time including an opera house built as an addition to a post office (it still stands), a jail (which has been used as a movie theater), an old printing press, an insurance company building (now used as apartments) and many more examples of architecture which includes Greek Revival, Victorian Gothic and Romanesque Revival styles. Today's economy depends largely upon agriculture which employs many people throughout the county including farmers, ranchers, mechanics, chauffeurs/drivers etc., along with local businesses such as convenience stores/convenience cabs etc., gas stations/petroleum products supply stores etc., as well as service sectors such as health care/medical services etc.. Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded by French colonists in 1822 and named after the cape of Gibraltar. The city is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The first permanent white settlers in Cape Girardeau were Huguenots who arrived from France in 1816 and built a sawmill on the river La Salle near what is now downtown. They numbered about eighty-five people at their peak; however, by 1820 all but four of these had left for other parts of Missouri because of religious differences over slavery. In 1822, three brothers - Pierre Lacombe (1796-1868), Auguste Lacombe (1801-1859), and Charles Lacombe (1800-1873) - bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of land on the east side of the river Maumee from Daniel Boone for $200 sterling. One thousand acres (820 ha) lay contiguous with present-day downtown cape Girardeaiou as well as much later acreage along both banks of the river bluffs overlooking it to the south and northwest.. Lacombe Brothers sold out their interest in this tract including all improvements made thereon to others until they finally relinquished occupancy to General James Kappes on December 3rd 1830 after having long desired to possess it themselves. In March 1830 they published a deed dated that date setting forth: "That we do make known our intention to sell this tract namely called “Cape G” or any part thereof for 640 pounds Sterling more than what has been offered for it hitherto." This sale included an addition 600 acres further upriver which became present day downtowncape girardaisuo After Kappes' purchase it was renamed "Girardville" after one Mr. Girard who resided within its limits before he sold his interests back to them July 5th 1834-.
